I'm engaged in what the French call la chasse au bonheur, the hunt for happiness.
In Europe you find one who self indulges at a tiny table or a park for hours. Lingers excessively without guilt while entertained by tiny details that spark into something majestic. You find one sketching, reading, thinking or day-dreaming. No wonder most of the world's greatest philosophers came from Europe. They found inspiration from the dewy sidewalks, couples interacting, or just simply from starring into space until something radical popped into their head. It's not even about the coffee or food, it's about the moments that created a philosophy or a famous painting. What exactly is it that Europe has that we Americans crave? If I were to linger at my cafe down the street here in Newport Beach I would feel guilty, while thinking to myself "I should get going, I have too much to do to be doing nothing" And even if I tried this, it wouldn't work. Most people would be in a rush, while talking on their cell phones. Not embracing time, or appreciating the way the sun lights up the crystal chandelier and dances through the room. I'm one of those 'people' and it saddens me.
La Chasse au Bonheur is something I will always search for here. I'll always hunt for that inspiration that comes from doing, what we call, nothing while one in Europe may call it subjective well-being.

I will hunt for the grand happiness that comes from the pleasure of engaging life and appreciating it's curious surroundings.

Noelie, I have been staring at this last photo. Oh my...how are the candles in the water? It's sooo pretty! I wish I was in Paris sitting in a cafe, now not later! I don't know what I'm hunting for, but it's not antiques today!
Great post!
So the next time my boss catches me staring out the window, gazing longingly at the Hollywood Hills I will simple say, "La Chasse au Bonheur boss!"
That said, I must admit that I find it more productive, when faced with a problem at work, to stare out the window than say, my computer screen.
What a wonderful blog you have, so cosy and poetic :)

We are quite rushed here. It would be nice to shop a market without hearing someone on their cell phone. Do we really need to hear conversations about gallbladder surgeries, how much so and so paid for new drapes, complaints about how coaches don't give their child enough time on the field and worst are the one uppers each of whose kid is smarter than the other. I would love some peace and quiet.
This is a beautiful post. I so agree. I often feel I was born on the wrong side of the globe because of your description above. Sometimes I feel I am searching for a place where people slow down and ask if you want a refill and mean it. This world can be so exhausting. xoxoxoxo
Hi Dews, I've been doing just that and feeling a little guilty. Thanks for this wonderful post, I'm going to enjoy my lingering hours even more now!
I love this post for today. You know the Buddists have figured this out long ago.....they believe in being TOTALLY IN THE PRESENT. By doing so, you cannot be talking on the cell phone while walking down the street or reading a book while quietly sitting. You JUST SIT! I love that concept.
Spund like you might as well.

What beautiful thoughts and photos, Noel. Wish you lived closer and we could have a serious tete-a-tete on this subject whilst lingering over cafe au laits at a quiet (possible in California?) cafe...!
I try to get as much quiet time as possible and do detest the rush rush rush. I am conscious of needing to slow down, to pace myself (a term they use in the headache world but which we all should consider!). I think quiet, reflection time is good for the soul, necessary especially for us thinking types to process everything.
I call myself a slow thinker, which mostly means I need time to ruminate on things, and like to avoid the rush of too much information, even if it means turning off the computer for the weekend (or not having a facebook account, where I worry already I am missing things!).
I am reading more and turning the tv off more. Walking outside in the evenings more and going to the gym less. Resting on the sofa when I used to go shopping. I am teaching myself to rest more, but it is hard as I am pretty Type A! But I do love naps...
xo Noel! Terri
Scoop,
You put into words so beautifully how I feel and what I search or crave daily. This is why I dig so hard into books, nature, sunlight, foreign documentaries, music and some of our blogging friends. It is a universal understanding that is a part of us all no matter where on the globe we live. My quiet time is my prayer. Thank you my little one to share this post. You continue to unfold and Amaze me everyday.
XO

So true... I love this post.
Whenever I'm abroad I pick up on this "la chasse au bonheur" and am always enchanted by it. Once I'm back home I completely forget that special feeling of allowing oneself to be relaxed and completely present in the moment without a care in the world. I love the slower, more civilized pace over there. It's not completely focused on the filling up every second of your time with goals or plans or stress.
So glad I stopped by today...
reading your post gives me greater insight into the lovely you :)
Have a nice weekend, Noel!
Much love,
Terri
Noel,
I'm continuously in the rapture of La Chasse au Bonheur, and I firmly believe we must be the change we wish to see. The 'rat race' of the everyday life just isn't worth it and leaves us feeling so 'empty' and unfulfilled. Waiting for that special 'light' to go off in our minds as a new spark of creativity and inspiration is ignited is one of the greatest pleasures of existence. Following this spark with the wherewithal to put it into reality is the next step you so beautifully capture and sets you apart from the rest of those who just 'talk'. Living in La Chasse au Bonheur is the key to making our souls and minds feel balanced. Noel, you have already captured its essence by knowing it is what you want and wish for daily. I'm so fortunate to have you as my friend who believes in such a happy-filled life journey.
Bisous,
Melissa
Dear Noel, I think that I could get a First Class Honours Degree in thinking, day-dreaming and contemplating !!!! It runs in our family and we are very good at it !!
We were once out to dinner in the States. There were quite a few of us and all Brits. After we had been there for a few hours the waiter came up to us ans said 'Us Americans eat and run, you Brits dine' !!!!
A beautiful post, Noel and one to ponder on.
By the way. We rented a house on Newport Beach and had the BEST time. XXXX
Bonjour Noel,
Great post. Over here in Paris they do like to find a café and linger...perhaps there are just more cafés or it could be the fact that they simply have mpre time off than in the States. Either way I'm very happily getting the hang of it. I do believe you have found the key to appreciating the inspiration all around you since you create the lovliest things!
Happy Sunday,
Mimi
Thank you for sharing your thoughts in this post. It describes exactly how I feel, as well.
I hope you have found some la chasse au bonheur time this weekend.
xo ~Dana
I have asked my daughter Charlotte who lives in Paris why people are so laid back. She disagrees and says - they just take longer lunches then work later and then later sit around talking because their TV is crap :)
Hola Noel! In spain we said "en busca de la felicidad", moments for relax,.... for talking with a friends,....to look everybody and nobody....."sobremesa" talking for houres after diner... its tipical in Europe.Very diferent... Very good photos!! Bisous Esther
Ahh I relate to this so much and have thought the exact same things. You know I think we may need to take a very long holiday in Europe and develop this laidback lifestyle....yes!
xoxo
very very very well said! this is a huge reason why i fight so hard to stay in france, la vie is better. They tried to transfer me to our new york office but I just can't bare the thought anymore of going to work and having to eat my lunch over my computer or poeple giving me the glare when i take a little too long of a coffee break on the terrace chatting with a work mate. here you can get away with indulging a little bit more.
i look forward to my two weeks off and ma chasse au bonheur. goodluck with your my dear and never be afraid to linger a bit longer and enjoy the moment!
xoxo Bardot in Blue
PS I didn't know you were in Newport? I grew up between there and Santa Barbara :D

I understand exactly what you mean. When I am in Paris or London, I can sit and sketch for hours in a cafe and yet when I'm in North America I feel too rushed to do so. Thank you for reminding me to slow down and enjoy the beauty before me.
Dearest Noel,
Yes! I have been searching for five years now...My la chasse au bonheur has now become, that there is one admirable form of the imagination. The imagination that is so intense that it creates a "new" reality, that it makes things happen. This journey of 1000 miles has begun with one single step.
Have a nice weekend and please enjoy this for inspiration...The 2010 International Garden Festival - DOMAINE DE CHAUMONT-SUR-LOIRE, http://domaine-chaumont.fr

Beautiful post. You are making me think about what is really important.
Just popping in to say hello. I'm not dead, just busy. Normal service will resume as soon as possible :)

Dear Noel, what a beautiful post... You are so very right in every word and I do feel the same way as your are. I was born and raised in Europe and I often catch mysef missing that perfect ballance I used to have when living back home. In Amrica somehow time is a cosntant race with no breaks to breath... I am hoping to move to France one day, or Italy - somwhere where being inspired comes from being able to sit and observe beauty ...
I am so very sorry for being absent for a while and being such a terrible Blog friend. Past few weeks were simply crazy between racing to Texas to get fabrics for upcoming collection, renovation of my house and day to day things in Atelier. It feels so wonderful to have a moment to visit my favorite Blogs and read fabulous posts just like this one. Have a very beautiful the rest of the week. :-)
Hello,
I am Elise Valdorcia and I am French.I wanted to tell you thank you for comments on my work on Frenblue post( angels in paper mache). You have really good taste, your blog is beautiful.
Very best

One of the things I love about Paris! Not only that you can find it on most 'rue' corners but that while there, we can often do this without guilt ourselves. I try to make it a point when there to sit and write (or people watch) at least once or twice.
Loved this post!
Kirsten
gorgeous blog!
Bonjour Noel,
Just wanted to stop by to let you know you may be interested in my latest post. While cruising by the windows of Galleries Lafayette I was forced to stop and snap a few photos of their glorious vitrine displays - overflowing with paper flowers in the softest blush color.
I thought you may enjoy taking a peek. You'll have to excuse the reflection, I haven't caught on to that yet!
Bon week-end,
Mimi
After what seems an age I am back in the fold.
New website DONE
New collaboration DONE
and at last a post telling everyone who I have been collaborating with. If you have a nosey gene, as I have, then pop over and see.

What a lovely expression, and description as well! I am like you, maybe we both belong in Europe? Or at least the Europe of our minds?
Just came upon your blog and love it!! For starters, Cafe Flore is my second home in Paris. Straight off the plane from New york, I get rifd of my luggage and run to Cafe Flore for tartines...then comes the chevre chaud....then wait around for my meetings...business of friends. I think that my french heritage has stayed with me in in all moments, I try to find some form of pleasure. In the States, we live in a frenzy but still, I do stop , look and embrace it all. I guess that is whi i love so much sitting in a cafe and especially the one you pictured, my very favorite, Cafe Flore
Where IS my fancy little Scoop?!?!?!?
beautiful post, thank you for my europe !!
Hello, beautiful post. Very wise words. :) I always enjoy stopping by for a visit to your blog.
Have a pretty weekend, gail
I have always wanted to live simpler, to be able to just sit at a cafe, drinking some delightful, and just live in the moment...but, alas, I am another one of those Americans who can't seem to slow down long enough to even take a bite to eat! I believe I'll start taking more time out for myself...tomorrow...
Oh, absolutely! I couldn't agree more, I always feel guilty when I take a little break. Blogging has fulfilled a lot of this for me, there isn't really a point to it, I suppose, but it is so enjoyable! Your blog is gorgeous, so happy to find you and happy to be your newest follower!
Love your blog...look forward to following :)
What a beautiful post! There are so many things in life we rush through and don't take the time we should to enjoy and soak in. I think everyone in life is searching for something, sometimes it's necessary to take a time-out and put it all on hold so you can really listen and appreciate the beauty all around us. Thank you for this reminder!
My first cafe creme in Paris, straight from the airport is at Cafe Flore....Paris would not be Paris without its side walk cafes...This is almost what i miss the most about France.
